How long SEO takes, and what happens each month
Google's own guidance is four months to a year before SEO work shows in results, and that matches what I see on real local sites. The number is not the useful part. The useful part is knowing what should be happening in month one, month three, and month six, so you can tell the difference between work that is compounding and a retainer that is coasting.
Why does it take months at all?
Three clocks run at once. Google has to crawl and re-index the changed pages. It has to see enough signals, links from your own pages, mentions elsewhere, reviews, to trust the change. And your competitors are not standing still. None of those clocks can be paid to run faster; they can only be started sooner.
What should happen in month one?
The technical floor: every page with a real title, a description, a canonical, structured data, a sitemap that matches the site, and nothing broken. On most sites I inherit this month alone fixes things that were quietly costing rankings for years.
Search Console connected, so from here on every claim about progress comes from Google's numbers, not a vendor's dashboard.
What should happen in months two and three?
Pages that answer the questions people actually type: what it costs, how to choose, how long it takes, your service in your town. Internal links from those pages to the pages that sell. The Google Business Profile filled in properly, with reviews coming in every week, not in a burst.
You should start seeing impressions rise in Search Console before clicks do. That is normal. Impressions are Google testing you.
What should happen by month six?
Clicks following impressions on the pages that were built to sell. Some phrases in the top three, more on page one, and a list of pages sitting just off page one that get the next round of work. Pages that lost traffic get refreshed rather than left to decay.
The signs it is not working
No Search Console access. Reports that show rankings for phrases nobody types. New pages every month with no internal links. A vendor who cannot name which page brought which call. Any one of those, ask harder questions.
What is the honest promise?
Deliverables and honesty. I do not promise a ranking, and neither does anyone who understands how this works. What I do promise: the pages get built, the links get placed, the profile gets worked, and you see Google's own numbers every month in a one-page report. SEO here is one of thirteen trades under one roof, so the pages, the links and the profile are worked by the same person.
What to do tonight
Check whether you own your Search Console. If you cannot log in, you cannot see whether anyone is working. Fix that first; it is free.
Questions owners ask
How long does SEO take for a local business?
Google's guidance is four months to a year. Technical fixes can show sooner; new content and reviews compound over two to three quarters.
What should I see in the first month of SEO?
The technical floor fixed and Search Console connected. Rankings rarely move in month one; broken basics getting repaired is the month-one result.
Can anyone promise first-page rankings?
No. Anyone who promises a ranking is promising something they do not control. Ask for promised deliverables and monthly reporting instead.
