Video alternatives, and when each one wins
Video is not always the answer. A page that answers the price question beats a video that dances around it, and a calculator beats both. Here are the five alternatives owners ask me about, the case where each one wins, and where video takes it back. I make video, so read this as the honest out before the pitch.
When do photos beat video?
When the proof is the finished thing. A patio, a haircut, a kitchen. A stranger can judge a photo in a second and a video in thirty, and on a slow connection the photo loads. Real photos of real work, with the town named, do more for a trade than most videos. The composite teardowns in the landscaper teardown had great photos and still lost calls; the problem was never the pictures.
When does a written page beat video?
When the question is a number. What it costs, how long it takes, what is included. People searching for those want to read the answer and compare, and a video hides the number behind a play button. This site has sixty-six cost guides for that reason. The page answers; the video would have performed.
When does an interactive tool beat video?
When you want the visitor to do something instead of watch something. A cost calculator, a quiz, a game. The person who uses a tool has spent a minute with your business and got an answer about themselves, which a video cannot give. The interactive tools play is the mechanics, and the playable court on the homepage is the proof.
When do AI avatar ads beat a shoot?
When you need to test what to say before you spend on saying it well. One avatar, ten hooks, a week of small spend, and the winner tells you the message. A traditional shoot is one expensive guess. The AI ads play is the method, and it wins exactly until you know the message, at which point a real shoot of the winning angle can be worth it.
When does a live demo call beat all of it?
When the sale is large and the product needs a conversation. A remodel, a software setup, a financial plan. Fifteen minutes on a call with the person who does the work outperforms any video, and the video's only job is to get the call booked. Build the video for that, or skip it and put the calendar link where the video would have been.
When does video win?
When the thing you sell has to be seen moving, when trust has to be built before a stranger will call, or when the platform is video and you want to be on it. For those, the video service page lists what I make, the do-it-yourself split says how much you can shoot alone, and the estimator shows how motion moves a build's range in six taps. I will tell you which of the six above fits, including when the answer is a page and a phone number.
What else do owners ask?
Is a video better than photos for a contractor?
For proof of work, photos with the town named usually win: faster to judge, faster to load. A weekly short from the job site is the one video worth adding, and it costs an afternoon.
Do I need video for SEO?
No. Google ranks pages that answer questions. A video on a page can hold people longer, but a page with no answer and a video does not rank for the question.
What is the cheapest alternative that works?
A written page that answers the price question honestly. It costs an afternoon, it ranks, and it outperforms a video that dances around the number.
