The Playbook · DIY OR HIRE
Build it yourself or hire a web designer?
Build it yourself when the site is a placeholder, and hire a web designer when the site is how customers find and judge you. That is the whole line. Below is what a handy owner can do alone in a weekend, what to leave to a builder, and the moment a do-it-yourself site starts costing more than the $2,500 it was supposed to save.
What can you build yourself, honestly?
A one-page site for a business that is testing an idea. A menu, hours, a map and a phone number that dials. If you sell one thing to people who already know you, a builder template with your real photos beats nothing, and it beats a half-finished custom site that never launches.
You can also handle the words. Nobody knows your trade like you do, and a designer who writes your copy from a questionnaire gets the details wrong. Write the paragraphs. Let someone else decide where they go.
What should you leave to a builder?
Anything a stranger judges in the first three seconds. Layout on a phone, load speed on cellular data, the tap-to-call path, the structured data Google reads. Templates get these roughly right, and roughly right loses to the competitor who got them exactly right.
The stranger test
Open your own site on your phone, on cellular, and pretend you have never seen the business. Can you tell what it does, where, and what to tap next in three seconds? If that takes scrolling, the template is costing you calls, whatever it cost you in dollars.
When does DIY start costing more than hiring?
The day your website becomes the way people find you. From then on every visit the template loses is a customer. The subscription is the smallest part of the bill; the larger part is the Saturday you spent fighting a page builder instead of working, and the customer who called the next name on the list.
Run the math with a customer value, not a website price. If one new customer is worth $2,000 to you, a custom build at my Signature floor of $2,500 pays for itself with two of them. If a customer is worth $40, keep the template and spend the weekend collecting reviews instead.
What does hiring actually cost?
My floors are public. Signature builds start at $2,500 for a custom site of up to about eight pages, Flagship builds start at $5,000, and most builds ship in two to four weeks. The six-tap estimator on the start page gives you a real range before anyone talks, and if the build fits in five pages or fewer it offers Done in a Day.
After launch, care is separate: $149, $349, or $749 a month, month-to-month, cancel with 30 days' notice. If you do not need a plan, I will say so.
Which is the right call for you?
Placeholder, side project, testing the water: build it yourself tonight and do not feel bad about it. Trade, practice, shop or venue that lives on local search: hire someone whose finished sites you can open on your phone and judge. The person who built this site, playable court and all, is the person who answers the phone here.
Two plays to read next: the honest read on DIY builders against custom, and the alternatives to hiring anyone, because sometimes a Google profile and a phone number is the whole job.
What else do owners ask?
Can I start with a DIY site and hire later?
Yes, and it is often the right order. Keep the domain in your own name from day one, so the move is a rebuild and not a rescue. The words and photos you gathered carry straight into the custom build.
Is a web designer worth it for a one-person business?
When customers find you by searching, yes. A solo contractor loses more to a site that hides the phone number than a bigger firm does, because every lost call is a bigger share of the week.
What do I keep if I stop paying a builder platform?
Usually the domain and nothing else. The design, the pages and often the photos live inside the platform. That is the quiet difference between renting and owning, and it is the first of the ten questions to ask before hiring anyone.
