Skokie, Illinois

Old Orchard and Dempster are not one trip.

Skokie shares Morton Grove's east line. Dempster Street and Oakton Street both continue from one village into the other. Old Orchard sits on Skokie Boulevard. The Yellow Line stops at Dempster-Skokie and at Oakton-Skokie, and the village center runs along Oakton. A customer going to the mall is not on the same errand as a customer walking the village street. The page should say which one you are.

Two commercial maps, one village

Old Orchard is a mall. National stores, a parking field, and a search that mixes the center with every business that typed Skokie into a profile. If you are near the mall, say so, and say what you offer that the mall does not. If you are not near the mall, do not use it as a landmark. It puts the pin in the customer's head in the wrong parking lot.

Downtown, along Oakton, is the other map. The Oakton-Skokie station is the reference point. Dempster-Skokie is the other. A business can name the station it is actually near. Naming both, plus the mall, is how a simple direction becomes a paragraph nobody trusts.

Dempster itself runs west into Morton Grove without a change in the pavement. The listing city still changes. A shop on the Skokie side should be Skokie on the profile and on the website. The service area can include Morton Grove, Lincolnwood, and Evanston when you really go there. The city of the business is not a keyword. It is the village on the door.

The page depends on the trade

A studio near the mall needs the offer, the schedule, and a way to start. A restaurant on Dempster needs today's hours, what you serve, and photos of the food. A contractor who parks a van in Skokie and works across the close-in suburbs needs the towns and the kind of job, not a pretend storefront. Those are three different first screens. I wrote the trade versions separately: gyms and studios, restaurants, and contractors and remodelers.

What stays the same is the pair of surfaces. The site says what the listing cannot fit. The listing's category, hours, phone, website, and photos match the site. The free website and Google audit checks that pair on the page you send and the public listing. No password. The $650 setup is the separate job of filling the profile in, if you want that done for you.

Home turf, without a fake address

From the Morton Grove base, a same-week visit for photos at a Skokie business is practical. That is the point of keeping Skokie on the service area map. It is not a ranking claim, and it is not a list of clients. BuiltBySam does not publish a street address. The short door into the same website work is web design in Skokie. The longer pages for the villages on the other side of the line are Morton Grove and Niles.

Common questions

Does a business near Old Orchard need the same site as one on Dempster?

No. Old Orchard on Skokie Boulevard is a mall trip. Dempster and the Oakton village center are street trips, and the Yellow Line stops at Dempster-Skokie and Oakton-Skokie. The page should say which trip the customer is on. Using both as decoration makes the directions worse.

What changes at the Morton Grove village line?

Dempster Street continues. The city on the Google listing does not. A shop on the Skokie side of that line should not be filed as Morton Grove, and the reverse. The website and the listing have to name the same village.

What belongs on the listing, and what belongs on the site?

The listing carries the category, the hours, the phone, the website, the photos, and the services a customer sees before they tap through. The site carries the longer explanation: what you do, what you do not do, and the one next step. They should not contradict each other.

Can the first meeting be in Skokie?

Yes. Skokie shares Morton Grove's east line, so a visit to the business in the same week is practical. That visit is for photographs of the real place. BuiltBySam still has no published street address.
